MARMARIS, Muğla - Marmaris is set to have a sister city in China. The popular holiday district in the western city of Muğla signed a pre-protocol with the Chinese town of Jinan on Monday that will link them as sister cities.
In Marmaris on Saturday evening, Mou Luyang, the mayor of the 6 million people in Jinan, met Marmaris Mayor Ali Acar and Marmaris local administrator Serdar Polat.
"If we can be sister cities, we can collaborate in education, health and commerce," Luyang said at the Marmaris Chamber of Commerce, or MTO.
The head of the MTO, Mehmet Baysal, said the talks were positive and the Chinese delegation’s offer to become sister cities was welcomed by Marmaris administrators.
The Chinese delegation was presented with Marmaris’ famous pine honey, herbs and coffee cups.
Antalya leads
More than 20 Turkish cities have sister cities worldwide. Among the cities in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, Antalya has the most sister cities. The Mediterranean city has eight sister cities including Austin, Texas, in the United States, Kazan in Russia and Nuremberg in Germany.
The Western city of Aydın has two sisters in Manchester, England, and Le Havre, France.
Adana, which is the fifth biggest city of Turkey and located in the south of the country, has three sisters, including Jeddah of Saudi Arabia, Beerscheba of Israel and Shymkent of Kazakhstan.
