MARMARİS - Marinas in Marmaris, Fethiye and Datça hosting hundreds of yachts every year were packed with yachts from all over the world, despite the global economic crisis.

Sea Tourism Union Chairman and Marmaris Martı Marina General Manager Ercan Güneştutar said that the marinas in Turkey reached 85 percent capacity in May and the marinas in the southern Aegean were at 100 percent capacity.

Stating that the global economic crisis opened an opportunity for marinas, Güneştutar said: "The global economic crisis did not damage us. The crisis can only affect us with the sales of fuel and other market items. The marina fees in Spain and Italy are four times more expensive then our fees in Turkey, for that reason they prefer Turkey. For that reason, the global economic crisis turned into a chance for us."

Marmaris Netsel Marina General Manager Zafer Ergün also said that they were full and they could not meet the demand. He said that despite the expectations that economic crisis would affect tourism negatively, yacht tourism was going very well. "According to information we obtained from other marinas, we can say that yacht tourism will have a great year. The agencies also sold all season," said Ergün.

Ergün, pointing out that there was much need for marinas, said: "When we look at the supply-demand balance in all of Turkey, we can say that there is a need for new marinas, because owners of yachts with foreign flags want marinas at a distance due to security and technical reasons." In Marmaris where there are 250 coves, there are only four marinas with a 3,500 yacht capacity.
