BODRUM - The distance from London to Turkey's top holiday spot is about to be shortened, as the Europe-wide low price carrier, EasyJet announces the start of Gatwick to Bodrum flights. The company sees it as 'a great opportunity,' EasyJet spokesman says.
One of Turkey's popular holiday spots, Bodrum, is about to be linked to London with a new series of flights.
The Europe wide low price carrier, EasyJet announced it will commence London Gatwick to Bodrum flights from April 23.
The Bodrum flights will operate three times a week, Monday, Thursday and Saturdays, until Oct. 24. Seats for Bodrum and three other new European routes announced went on sale Feb. 4.
The new one-way fares to Bodrum-Milas airport, or BJV, are currently quoted on the Web site ranging from the lowest fare in April of 48.99 pounds for flights from Gatwick to Bodrum, up to 58.99 pounds. For the Bodrum to Gatwick journey the lowest fare for April was quoted at 23.99 pounds. The prices become higher month by month up to current quotes for August at around 79 pounds.
Ticket fares
According to Web site booking pages the fares include all taxes and charges and there is a baggage allowance of 20 kilograms for one bag.
The lowest prices on offer contrast greatly with the Gatwick-Dalaman prices currently quoted on the Web site for April at 108 pounds, ranging up to 168 pounds for August. The Dalaman route flies five days a week.
The absence of the four new routes on the EasyJet Web site, the daily flights to Munich, Vienna and Zurich starting from April, and the Bodrum flight, supports airline industry comments that Easyjet will compete directly with another European low cost carrier Aerlingus. Aerlingus earlier announced new routes to three European cities in April.
EasyJet spokesman Andrew McConnell said: "We have been analyzing these new routes for a while and we see this is as a great opportunity. These new routes fit into our business model by continuing to connect major European cities."
Bodrum property owners and residents were posting and e-mailing the news as soon as it was announced with new journeys being booked almost instantly. "It is about time," said one Gümbet resident.
There have been various online petitions to Easyjet for a direct service link. A new one started with a Manchester-Bodrum link.
EasyJet first started services to Turkey in 2006 with their year round London Luton route to Istanbul’s Asian shore, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, followed by the summer season Gatwick-Dalaman route. A Manchester-Dalaman flight will start in August 2009.
Easyjet’s sister company, EasyCruise, first included Bodrum as its only Turkish port on weekly Aegean cruises in 2008 and is set to continue them in 2009.
