Local swine flu case detected

ANKARA - The Health Ministry has confirmed the first case of person-to-person transmission of the H1N1 virus in Turkey, making it the first infection of someone who has not traveled abroad.
According to the ministry, a person who came in close contact with a citizen who had arrived from abroad and was infected with the H1N1 virus, also referred to as swine flu, has contracted the virus. The patient is said to be in good general condition and is receiving treatment.
The Health Ministry said 23 people in Turkey have been affected by the virus to date, including the latest case. Of the 22 earlier cases, 14 of the victims are Turkish citizens while eight are residents of other countries.

"It has been proved that a person contracted influenza A (H1N1) after coming in close contact with a citizen that had returned from abroad and was carrying the virus," the statement from the ministry read.
"No need was seen to hospitalize the patient. This takes the total number of those who contracted the virus in our country to 23.
This is the first case of human-to human transmission in Turkey."
Officials from the Health Ministry did, however, note that the virus is usually transmitted from one person to another and that half the infection cases globally were the result of such transmission.
The officials said all necessary measures are in place and that there is no reason to worry, since it is the summer season. The World Health Organization declared swine flu a pandemic June 11. Swine flu was first detected in Mexico and spread quickly to the United States.
