Liverpool ends the year on top

ISTANBUL - Liverpool thrashed Newcastle yesterday 5-1 to end the year 2008 on top of the Premier League.
Two days after crashing Bolton Wanderers 3-0 on Boxing Day, Liverpool’s attacking force was on form again, even though the Reds’ main striker Fernando Torres was out to injury once again, and Friday’s double-striking hero Robbie Keane was sidelined due to Rafael Benitez’s rotation policy.
However, Liverpool’s starting 11 at the St. James’ Park did not miss a beat as the Reds took the lead within the half an hour in the game.
A magnificent strike by skipper Steven Gerrard made the score 1-0 in the 31st minute. Five minutes after, it was defender Sami Hyypia who scored from a powerful header into the left-hand side of the goal.
A header by David Edgar on the last minute of the first half gave Newcastle a glimmer of hope, but starlet Ryan Babel converted a chance coming by a mistake by what seemed like a communication problem between goalkeeper Shay Given and defenders Nicky Butt and Fabricio Coloccini in the 50th minute, before Gerrard scored his second in the 66th minute and Xabi Alonso converted a penalty kick with 15 minutes left in the game.
