ISTANBUL - Turkish champion Galatasaray faces French side Bordeaux in the draw for the UEFA Cup round of 32 made on Friday.
This will be
Galatasaray’s third date with Bordeaux in the last three years. Two teams matched in the Champions League group stages in the 2006/2007 season, and Galatasaray was beaten 3-1 in France, after getting a goalless draw in Istanbul. Last year, two teams played in the UEFA Cup, and Galatasaray lost again, this time with a final score of 2-1. Coached by former French international Laurent Blanc, Bordeaux finished its tough Champions League group third behind Roma and Chelsea.
According to the UEFA Cup status, runners-up in the UEFA Groups are drawn against the third-placed teams of the Champions League.
Italian favorite AC Milan and holder Zenit St Petersburg face German opposition in the guise of Werder Bremen and Stuttgart in the cup. Former winner Tottenham faces Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk with the other surviving Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Manchester City meeting CSKA Moscow and FC Copenhagen respectively.
Also on Friday, the draws for the Champions League’s last 16 were made and the English clubs are scheduled to play tough opponents.
Holder Manchester United was paired with Italian champion and Serie A leader Inter Milan while Premier League leader Liverpool takes on nine-time champion Real Madrid.
The Manchester United tie will see another former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, returning to face Premiership opposition in his new role in charge of Inter.
"Obviously Jose has put us out of the competition before," said United's communications director Phil Townsend in reference to Mourinho's success at the same stage in 2004 with eventual European champions Porto. "But equally we put Inter out in 1999 when we went on to win the tournament so maybe that's a good omen for us."
