ISTANBUL - The populace that intends to compete on TV quiz shows to earn something large or small is increasing day by day. The people who have applied to TV programs featuring quiz shows on national channels has surpassed 2.5 million.
With the effects of the present global economic crisis, demand for quiz shows on televisions is growing.
The Chamber of Accountants and Financial Advisors of Istanbul, or İSMMMO, undertook a study called "Dream Competition" that shows 15 percent of adults in Turkey want to compete on a quiz show.
While the number of TV series is decreasing in the face of the economic crisis, new quiz shows are appearing constantly. There are 12 quiz shows on nine national channels currently and five more quiz shows are expected to debut in 2009.
As the shows differ from each other in terms of style and content, such as culture, knowledge and talent, quiz shows based on the theme of adventure have just been added to the mix. Generally, celebrities such as singers and actors host the quiz shows. The wage hosts are paid for each episode varies from 30,000 to 50,000 Turkish Liras.
While the production costs of TV series range from 100,000 to 300,000 liras per episode, a quiz show costs a fraction of that. According to the data from the Media Monitoring Center, last year, quiz shows on 12 channels attracted 192,998 seconds of advertisements.
