ISTANBUL - The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has announced the program for the 16th annual Istanbul International Jazz Festival. Headlining artists to take the stage at this year’s event include George Benson, Melody Gardot, Joe Jackson and Peter Cincotti.
The Istanbul International Jazz Festival, one of the most prestigious events on the city’s cultural calendar, has announced yet another stellar lineup for its 16th year.
Sponsored by Garanti Bank and organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, or İKSV, the festival is set to hold more than 30 concerts between July 2 and 15 at a series of historic and modern venues across the city. Events at the Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater, the Marmara Esma Sultan Palace, the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, and the Istanbul Modern, among others, will transform Istanbul into a city of jazz.
The Jazz Boat, now a festival tradition, will host various concerts by esteemed musicians as it cruises the Bosphorus on July 5 and 12. A series of "street concerts" will also bring the jazz vibe out of the concert halls and into public spaces.
Headline concerts
Headline concerts for this year’s festival include George Benson’s "Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole." The acclaimed guitarist will play a selection of Cole’s songs, combining jazz, R&B and fusion, at the Cemal Topuzlu Open-Air Theater. The three electric-guitar virtuosos of SMV, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, will also electrify the city air with a performance at the outdoor venue.
European and Turkish jazz artists will come together at the "European Jazz Club," a three-day concert that will include performances by the Cenk Erdoğan Trio and Tineke Postma, Yıldız Ibrahimova and Mike Del Ferro and the Nilüfer Verdi Trio with Andreas Buchmann.
Pop-jazz vocalist, pianist and composer Peter Cincotti will perform songs from the Frank Sinatra era at İstinye Park, while hot young jazz talent Emiliana Torrini will take the stage at the Istanbul Modern. Maraca’s Otra Vision will bring a Latin vibe to the festival with their performance of Cuban music at the Marmara Esma Sultan Palace.
The "Meeting With the Experts" concert at the Aya Irini Museum will see the world-famous Azerbaijani vocalist Alim Quasimov, the renowned Turkish vocalist Erkan Oğur and violinist Derya Türkan perform a piece composed specifically for the festival.
Speaking at a press conference at the Marmara Esma Sultan Palace on Tuesday night, İKSV general manager Görgün Taner said that despite the effects the financial crisis has had on the culture industry, the festival continues to be supported by a large number of sponsors. This has enabled the foundation to announce yet another rich program for its annual festival.
Also speaking at the conference, Garanti Bank assistant general manager Nafiz Karadere said it was a great honor for the bank to be the core sponsor for a 12th year of one of the year’s best and most-anticipated events.
Youth concert
The chief organizer of the festival, Pelin Opcin, announced Tuesday that a "youth concert" would also be organized to give up-and-coming jazz artists the opportunity to perform their works for an audience. The date and venue for this event will be revealed in the upcoming months. In addition, young artists will be given the opportunity to meet with national and international artists in workshops and seminars.
Tickets for the festival will go on sale at www.biletix.com and at İKSV headquarters on May 9. More information, including the full event program, is available at www.iksv.org/caz.
