Former minister of foreign affairs Şükrü Sina Gürel has hit back at allegation made by the current Minister of Culture and Tourism, Atilla Koç. Talking at the Supreme Council, Koç suggested that a former minister "had bought houses for his ex and current wives,” without giving names. Şükrü Sina Gürel is adamant that he did nothing wrong: “I have nothing to hide,” said the former minister, “let’s take this to the court and see what happens.”

“Supreme Council is no place for gossip and bad-talk. I have done nothing that I cannot account for.”

Gürel also asserted that this outburst is a result of AKP’s antics geared towards giving some politicians a bad name, in a bid to cover up for their failure as they struggle to deal with corruption.

Gürel and his second wife Fulya Gürel, who gave him two sons, got a divorce in April 2001 on grounds on extreme incompatibility. Gürel agreed on an alimony of 50,000 YTL plus $600 monthly allowance, a house in Ankara and a villa in Fethiye.

Fulya Gürel has also made exclusive announcements to Hürriyet, claiming that the allegations are highly inappropriate. “My ex-husband comes from a respected and well-off family in Söke,” said Fulya Gürel, “the family had a grand villa, which was sold six years ago in 1999. My house in Ankara was bought with that money.”

Şükrü Sina Gürel has recently published an article in Cumhuriyet newspaper, which drew parallels between the AKP allegations and the previous Bület Ecevit government and the 1950’s malicious rumors that İsmet İnönü was a fugitive soldier.

“We will not give in easily,” wrote Gürel in his piece, “and our skin is not as thick as theirs.”
