HAKKARİ - The initial reaction to the first traffic lights erected in the town of Yüksekova in the southeastern province of Hakkari was one of confusion - with drivers either ignoring them or debating what red lights really meant.

The lights erected in the city center also created confusion because there was some debate about when pedestrians should cross. Yüksekova has a population of over 100,000 if one includes its villages and has around 7,000 registered cars. The province of Hakkari, which is on the border with Iran and Iraq, is one of the poorest provinces in the country.

Drivers asked about the red light gave conflicting answers, with some saying that cars must stop on green and move along when it turns red.

Pedestrians were just as confused. Resident İsmail Kaya, when asked what should be done at red lights, said, "At a red light, one can get off or on a bus that has stopped."The President of the Yüksekova Chamber of Drivers, Yavuz Özcan, said their members were very happy with the new traffic lights, thanking all those responsible for it.

He said the lack of any traffic lights was a huge problem until now. "Despite the fact that there are thousands of cars in the city center, no one erected traffic lights in Yüksekova before. It was a huge defficiency," he said.

"Drivers and pedestrians need to abide by traffic rules and cars should not speed," he said, adding that thousands of students passed through the city center every day and the lights would play a crucial role in preventing accidents.

"The lights will provide relief to traffic in the city center," he said.

On the matter of a single set of traffic lights being enough to address the need, Özcan said there were four other points in town where traffic lights were needed.

He also said he had talked to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan about the possibility of building a ring road around the town of Yüksekova.
