Kosovo, the youngest European state, would open its first embassy in the Turkish capital of Ankara, the Kosovar president said on Friday.

After his meeting with Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, President Fatmir Sejdiu told reporters Kosovo decided to upgrade diplomatic relations with Turkey to ambassadorial level.

Sejdiu instructed foreign ministry officials to take the necessary steps for opening of the embassy in Ankara, officials said.

Kosovo declared independence on February 17th and decided to open nine embassies in several countries.

Earlier, Kosovar Foreign Minister Skender Hyseni said that Kosovo would first open embassies in Brussels, United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy and United Nations.

Kosovo had a representative office in Istanbul since 1999.
