KONYA - A wastewater treatment facility located in the central Anatolia province of Konya will soon operate at full capacity to treat Konya's domestic wastewater that flows into the Salt Lake Basin.
Hasan Küçükaydın, deputy head of the provincial department of environment and forestry, said for the last 15 years, because of insufficient rainfall, only domestic waste could reach the lake. "The waste water threatened the existence of natural life in the lake, namely flamingos living at the shores of the lake," said Küçükaydın. "Farmers will be using clean water in agriculture. Human and animal life will no longer be at danger in the area," he added.
The Konya wastewater treatment facility, built by the Konya Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration, or KOSKİ, has the latest technology and has the capacity to treat 200,000 liters of water a day, according to Küçükaydın. After it operates at full capacity, waste channels in Beyşehir, Çumra, and Cihanbeyli district will no longer be released to the Salt Lake. The facility is working at 50 percent capacity at the moment.
Environmentalists warn the Salt Lake is becoming polluted as well as too dry due to the incorrect water policies in the region.
Küçükaydın said Konya Organized Industrial Zone Administration was building a facility to clean the industrial wastewater. This facility will be operational in October, and it will make a great contribution to the basin's cleaning, he said. There is a third facility in the city, owned and operated for two years by Konya Sugar Factory.
