NEW YORK - For Chrysler's sake, it needs a judge who can move it quickly through the bankruptcy process. By most accounts, Arthur Gonzalez is the right judge.

"He is a judge you would want if that is what you want to happen," restructuring expert Evan Flaschen of Bracewell & Giuliani said of the government's wish to finish key parts of the case within 60 days. "He won't be afraid of a case this size or making the tough decisions."

When it comes to big, high-profile cases, Gonzalez has certainly had his share. He has presided over the Enron and Worldcom bankruptcies, among the biggest cases ever before Lehman Brothers filed in September.

Worldcom Inc. filed for bankruptcy in July 2002, and its reorganization plan was approved about 15 months later, in October 2003. Enron Corp. entered court protection in December 2001, and Gonzalez approved its reorganization plan in July 2004.

Gonzalez is one of 11 bankruptcy judges in the Southern District of New York, which uses random selection to assign cases. He has been a judge since 1995.
