KONYA - A judge in the central province of Konya was sentenced to three years nine months in prison for telling the court clerk to fill in for him during a trial. The clerk was found not guilty as he was deemed too new to the job.

In a trial on family inheritance in the Bozkır region of Konya in November 2007, the town judge failed to show up in court. According to charges later filed against the judge, he ordered the court clerk to fill in for him. The clerk conducted the trial and signed the court minutes.

When the plaintiff realized what had happened, he filed a compliant against both the judge and the clerk, with an inquiry leading to charges of "forging official documents" laid against the two.

The accused judge was found guilty and at first given three years in prison, which the court increased o four-and-a-half years for the fact that the forged document was court minutes. The prison term was later dropped to three years nine months in prison for the judge’s good behavior at court. The clerk was found not guilty because he had just started work and did not know what the job entailed. The judgment by the Bozkır court will have to be approved by the Supreme Court of Appeals.
