NEVŞEHİR - Artists from Turkey and Greek are working on a joint sculpture in Cappadocia. With efforts from the Defne Turkish Greek Friendship Association in Turkey and the Daphne Greek Turkish Friendship Association in Greece, two sculptors came together for the 8th Turkish-Greek Friendship Festival.
Greek Anthropologist Andonis Kutsubas and Turkish sculptor Ertuğ Atlı started last week working on a joint sculpture in the central Anatlian city of Nevşehir’s Avanos district. The sculpture is made up of two parts. The part that Kutsubas is working on is the shape of Cappadocia on earth and a pear sliced into two halves.
The works made by Atlı is made up of two tree trunks, whose roots are on air and branches and knobs are on ground.
Speaking to press members, Kutsubas said he aimed at symbolizing the people of Kavala ad Cappadocia region in his work. "During the population exchange, we were separated into two like a pear. But I combine two helves of the pear and try to tell that the line between the two publics is disappearing. We are closer to each other unlike the past. We are trying to remove the traces of the past," he said, adding that his work would be 1.5 meters tall and 50 kilograms.
Not roots but branches
Turkish sculptor Atlı said, "I am trying to tell that people, who were separated from each other during the population exchange, can meet with branches but not roots. I mean that people do not need to be from the same earth in order to come together. My work will be in 1.5 meters talls and 70 kilograms."
Sculptors said the works will be made of Avanos earth and the base would be made of Nevşehir stone. The sculptures will be done in June.
The Turkish Greek Friendship Festival will start on June 12 in Greek Kavala and end on June 16 in Cappadocia.
