NEW YORK - After the sea of black, which dominated first shows of the New York Fashion Week, Sunday brought injections of teal, magenta and purple. In tough financial times, color may be just what customers are looking for. NY Fashion Week runs until Friday

A sea of black clothes at New York Fashion Week got a shot of optimism Sunday from injections of teal, magenta and purple given by the designers.

In a difficult economy, color may be just what customers are looking for. Retail buyers were hoping that a dose of brightness and novelty would bring shoppers back to the stores.

"It's not about providing basics at this point," Colleen Sherin, fashion markets director at Saks Fifth Avenue, said before previews in the Bryant Park began.

Jewels set the tone at Lela Rose and Reem Acra on the third day of previews of fall collections. A palette including teal, fuschia and purple was bright enough to pop, but still appropriate for autumn.

There was plenty of black on the runways of Alexander Wang, Yigal Azrouel and Nicole Miller, but it was far from basic. Miller added splashes of metallics, purple, red and cobalt blue. Popular brand DKNY spiked black with hints of kelly green and rhubarb.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week runs through Friday.

Lela Rose in the park

Lela Rose mined little bits of magic from the enchanted garden she used as inspiration for her fall collection.

Instead of too many literal, kitschy beetles, bugs and butterflies, Rose used the wing shape as a starting point for the drape on many of her best looks, including a gold-green asymmetrical blouse and a green-gray, forest-print silk chiffon wrapped dress.

The most wearable pieces were the more basic daywear items, such as a ribbed cashmere storm jacket with wool patches that hinted at a military style, and a soft blue-and-gray plaid pea coat worn with a black-and-white tweed skirt - a nice mix of patterns that didn't seem dizzying or contrived.

Unlike many of the designers who show at the Bryant Park tents at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Rose is a designer at least partially accessible to the masses: She designs a line for Payless, a discount shoe chain, so coming soon to malls are shoe-meets-bootie styles in colored suede.

Latest trends from Lacoste

There probably isn't one silver Ğ or in fashion parlance, gunmetal Ğ bullet that will solve the industry's recession woes, so it shouldn't be a surprise that designers are trying several approaches to make their fall collections stick.

In the early days of the previews for retailers, editors and stylists, there has been a dominant tough-girl vibe, but Lacoste creative director Christophe Lemaire is going the opposite way with refined-yet-cozy clothes - elegance in what are essentially sweats that have been kicked up a few notches. He cited two polar opposite muses: Diane Keaton as menswear-loving Annie Hall and Princess Leia of the cult series "Star Wars."

The palette was rooted in shades of winter white, marigold and heathered blues, and most of the outfits were monochromatic.

That was emphasized with an interesting accessory: a knit band worn around the models' waists, like a scarf for the bodice. Many of the women's pants had a cropped leg that Lemaire then paired with knit boots that have potential to catch on like Uggs and be a lot less clunky in the process.
