Japan keeps interest rate on hold

TOKYO - Japan's central bank kept its benchmark interest rate steady amid signs that the country's economic picture may be brightening.
The Bank of Japan's eight-member policy board voted unanimously yesterday to leave the overnight call rate target unchanged at 0.1 percent. The bank also said in its semiannual economic outlook report that it expects Japan's economy to shrink 3.1 percent this year.
