İZMİR - Seven museums will be established in Konak, the central area of İzmir, to draw more tourists there, the district’s mayor has announced.
According to Mayor Hakan Tartan, the first new institution to open would be the Museum of Poetry, followed by museums of folklore, masks, caricature, sculpture, food and toys. He said the initiative would transform Konak into a capital of history and culture.
The Museum of Poetry will exhibit private possessions and handwritten poems belonging to famous poets and offer the opportunity to hear the verses in the poets’ own voices. The museum will also organize poetry-reading competitions, Tartan said.
The mayor compared what Konak is trying to do with poetry to what Antalya, home to a famous
film festival, is doing with cinema. He added that an award would be presented each year in the name of poet Mehmet Doğan.
The Museum of Folklore will focus on the culture of the Balkans and the Museum of Sculpture will organize events that invite arts students from all over the world to have their work exhibited in Konak.
According to Tartan, the Konak district currently does not have enough places where tourists would want to spend time; the new museums, he said, would keep them in the center longer and also benefit the local population.
Other projects in the works include turning İzmir’s Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street into a mini-İstiklal Street that would be lively 24 hours a day like the famous one in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district.
