ROME - Italy recalled its ambassador to Brazil yesterday as it protested the South American country's decision to grant asylum to an Italian fugitive sentenced to life in prison for political slayings in the 1970s.
The Italian foreign minister said Brazil's move to block the extradition of Cesare Battisti was "unacceptable." The decision was made earlier this month, and Brazilian prosecutor asked the country's Supreme Court to end extradition proceedings.
