Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema has expressed his support for Turkey's EU membership quest. D'Alema noted this week that he did not hold with the view that the EU doors should be closed to Turkey based on ethnic or religious reasons, saying "The Italian government is in complete support of Turkey's EU goals." D'Alema spoke to reporters at the Italian Foreign Ministry yesterday after a meeting on Turkey, saying "We see Turkey's EU membership as a necessity, and think that it will only contribute to the EU."
D'Alema also expressed support for the ongoing process of political and social reforms in Turkey while noting that EU membership would not mean an abnegation of religious or cultural roots for Turkey.
