ISTANBUL - Istanbul is bustling with conferences, concerts and exhibitions and organizations. This year is a warm-up for Istanbul as the European Culture Capital for 2010. From business people to sports lovers the city will host thosands of visitors.
While hundreds of art and culture events are being organized for 2009 by the Istanbul 2010 European Culture Capital Agency, or ECOC, to prepare the world for Istanbul’s leg as the culture capital of Europe, there are also many other international events happening throughout the year making the city a draw card for business people and sports lovers as well.
Istanbul will be bustling with events, conferences, concerts and big organizations throughout 2009 and among thousands of expected attendees, will also be many world dignitaries. Istanbul will host the 5th World Water Forum from March 16 to 22 in the Sütlüce Conference Center. As the water capital of the world for a week, Istanbul will welcome nearly 30 state ministers, hundreds of nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, and 20,000 participants.
Awards to be presented
The forum’s theme is Bridging Divides for Water. Prince Naruhito, heir to the throne of Japan, will attend the forum and present the Kyoto World Water Prize. Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderon, will also be present at the forum to present the Mexico Water Liability Award. Recognized by the United Nations and European Union, the world’s biggest gold and jewelry event, the World Jewelry Confederation will hold its 2009 World Congress in Istanbul from May 3 to 6, reported the Anatolia news agency. The congress expects jewelry industry leaders from 69 countries to attend.
The 3rd International Molecular Science Congress is another event drawing important names to Istanbul. Organized by the Turkish Molecular Science Association, the congress will be held at Harbiye Military Culture Center from May 5 to 9. Nobel Chemistry Prize winner Robert Huber will speak at the meeting.
From October 6 to 7, Istanbul will again be a draw card as it will host the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, or IMF, Annual Meeting of Bankers. Congress Valley in the Harbiye district that is currently still under construction, is the planned site for the meeting.
In addition to these significant events, there will also be many more international conferences held in Istanbul in 2009, including the World People Health Congress from April 27 to May 1, the International Congress on Lymphoma Leukemia Myeloma from May 21 to 24, the World Physical Science and Rehabilitation Congress from June 13 to 17, the Global Conference on Global Warming from July 5 to 9 and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology Congress from Sept. 12 to 16.
Sports fans eye Istanbul
The city will not only host conferences on the economy, environment and science; it will also be the site of many big sports events this year.
Sports fans flood to Istanbul for the last game in the UEFA cup to be played in
Fenerbahçe’s Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium on Istanbul’s Asian side on May 20.
Another highlight of the events calendar for 2009 will be the Formula 1 race held at Istanbul Park Track from June 5 to 7. World-famous Formula 1 drivers will again race in the "2009 Formula 1 ING Turkey Grand Prix." The European Fast Track Swimming Championship, one of the last international events to be held in the city for 2009.
