Istanbul is responsible for 42.76 percent of the 82.7 billion YTL ($68.4 billion) in taxes collected in Turkey for January to June 2008, the General Directorate of Public Accounts announced on Sunday.
In this period, Istanbul paid a total of 35.3 billion YTL ($29.1 billion) in taxes. Â Â Â Â

Istanbul is followed by Kocaeli, Ankara and Izmir as the cities that pay double digit contribution to taxes paid to the Treasury.ÂIn general, 79.6 percent of all taxes paid in Turkey are collected from four cities.

The city of Bayburt recorded the lowest amount of taxes paid for the January-June period with 8.89 million YTL ($7.3 million), the equivalent of 0.01 percent of all taxes paid to the Treasury.
