Istanbul Modern celebrates its 5th birthday

ISTANBUL - The Istanbul Modern art museum is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a new exhibition, "New Works, New Horizons," which displays 200 works from 134 artists.
The show takes viewers through the evolution of modern and contemporary art created in Turkey, from its initial phase until today, by introducing them to the most prominent artists and their work.
The texts accompanying the pieces in the exhibition discuss the social, cultural, economic and political dynamics of the process of the work’s development. These texts evoke the fact that the work of creating art is a part of life and that art advances by means of the interactions that surround it, and reference the transformation in art history in Turkey in the 20th century.
The small hall, described as the "Working Area," is positioned as a project location for researching concurrent developments in contemporary art. The exhibition brings artists from different geographic areas together, displaying their works side by side; by hosting their projects, it aims to encourage creativity and further artistic initiatives.
A highlight of the exhibition is Yoko Ono’s piece "Ex It." At the 53rd International Art Exhibition this year, Ono will be honored with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement award.
Video program
As part of the museum’s anniversary celebrations, the Istanbul Modern has launched its 10th video program, simultaneously with the "New Works" exhibition. By juxtaposing the works of three video artists, Amar Kanwar, Shahzia Sikander and Pascual Sisto, the program, titled "Significant and Unsignificant Events," explores the meaning of events steeped in military pageantry. Though these moments can appear to the viewer as bearing lofty significance and value, and containing a number of apparently random and puzzling events, they are in fact loaded with hidden meanings.
The exhibition and video program opened Tuesday and will continue through Aug. 16.
Istanbul Modern also hosts the photographs of Annette Merrild shot in nine big cities of nine countries in her exhibition "The Room Project. The project aims to display the differences and similarities between nations, geographies, cultures. There are 118 photographs in the exhibition, which is curated by is Engin Özendeş. It will continue through August 30.
