ISTANBUL - Opening as part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture project, Istanbul Islands Museum will feature works highlighting the history of the islands from the pre-Byzantine period.

A protocol was signed yesterday to carry out the Istanbul Islands Museum project in collaboration with the Islands Foundation and Islands Municipality. The museum will be located on Büyükada Island.

"The museum is scheduled to be finished in July 2010. The 150-year-old history of nine islands will be depicted with documents and photos," said project coordinator Serhat Baysan. He said the museum would become a city museum and display works in a permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition.

"In the temporary exhibition section, there will be documents and photos from the current period," said Baysan, adding that they would decide later about which works would be on view in the permanent section of the museum.

Baysan said there would also be an archive and library in the museum to give visitors access to photos and documents on the history of the islands.

The museum will be established in Büyükada Primary School, which was transferred to the Islands Municipality for the establishment of a museum but has been empty since then.
