ISTANBUL - The Royal Institute of British Architects, or RIBA, is to hold an exhibition on Istanbul architecture. Titled "Istanbul and Beyond: Selected Projects of Tabanlıoğlu Architects," the exhibition is completely film-based and brings to life work from the company's recent projects, some of the newest and most innovative buildings in Turkey.
Tabanlıoğlu Architects is a Turkish company based in Istanbul and known for its buildings such as the Istanbul Modern (2004), the first modern museum in Turkey, and the Doğan TV Center (2003). It also specializes in residential and mixed-use buildings, such as the Kanyon complex (2006) and Levent Loft. The company recently renovated the Ataturk Cultural Centre and the British Consulate and is currently in the process of constructing the tallest high-rise building in Istanbul, Sapphire Tower.
Film installation
Visitors to the exhibition will enter a corridor where three simultaneous projections give a sense of being suspended in mid-air as they travel through the Tabanlıoğlu buildings. Centred around a film installation, the exhibition examines 19 of the company’s domestic projects under four themes: media, boulevard, culture and beyond. Additional projection films will be used to reveal the various hidden details of each architectural design.
The exhibition will open Nov. 20 and continue through to Dec. 20 at the RIBA Gallery in London.
