ISTANBUL - İpragaz, a Turkish LPG distributor, and M Oil, the eight largest chain of petroleum stations in Turkey, concluded a cooperation agreement yesterday. According to the agreement, M Oil will distribute İpragaz’s LPG autogas in all its 400 stations in Turkey.
"Turkey is currently the largest LPG market in Europe," said Chief Executive Officer of İpragaz, Selim Şiper.
In 2008 the total volume of Turkey’s LPG market stood at 3.43 million tons. Some 60 percent of this is made of autogas LPG. "Over 2008, the consumption of gas LPG increased by 10.3 percent, while autogas LPG grew by 3.3 percent."
Autogas LPG is at present the cheapest fuel in Turkey. "This holds even when taking into account the recent price fluctuations. On the other hand, the special tax applied on gasoline and LPG fuels in Turkey is among the highest in the world," Şiper said.
The price for a litre of autogas currently stands at 0.89 Turkish Lira, excluding taxes. With the same logic petrol costs 0.95 liras and diesel 1.07 liras, he added. According to the World LP Gas Association, Turkey is the world’s 15th largest LPG market in the world, which has 7,500 gas stations.
Şiper also noted that in certain European Union countries, which have sufficient funds to allocate them also in environmental protection, LPG autogas market enjoys state incentives. "This is the case in Germany, for example. Petroleum stations selling LPG autogas get incentives. However, in Turkey the primary reason for the use of autogas is the affordable price."
