ISTANBUL - The most prominent names in poetry will come to Istanbul next week to read poetry and discuss the current trends in literature as a part of the International Istanbul Poetry Festival.

The annual event, which will take place May 12 to 16, is organized with the support of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, or ECOC, and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, under the honorary presidency of renowned Hürriyet columnist Doğan Hızlan.

Poetry readings will be held in D&R bookstores across the city, as well as in the intriguing interiors of Yerebatan Cistern or the Emirgan and Malta kiosks. The event will also feature a number of organizations, such as poetry academies held in Istanbul University, Kadir Has University and Kultur University. The evenings will be brightened by music concerts and live performances.

Among the international guests of the festival, the audiences will have a unique opportunity to meet in person a poet and political activist from South Africa, Breyten Breytenbach, Macedonian poet born in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, Mateja Matevski, and stateless poet and writer of Palestinian origin, Mourid Barghouti, to name just few.

Those who are interested in Turkish poetry will be able to hear the poems read by Ali Günvar, Ayşe Sevim, Celal Fedai, Nilay Özer, Turan Koç and Veysel Çolak among others.
