The author of the book titled “Strategic Depth,” which advocates a foreign policy that would put Turkey’s Ottoman past in its rightful place, Davutoğlu’s answers ran parallel to this thesis. “The feeling of flow in history” is what excites him most and accordingly losing that feeling is what he fears most. An innate ability to stop warring parties is what he desires in a super power.
An imaginary place where historical silhouettes of Jerusalem, Medina and Istanbul could be seen at the same time, is his favorite place to live. “There is no virtue without modesty, no honor without self-confidence and greatness,” is his life philosophy.
“If we have the ability to realize a problem, we have the ability to solve it as well.” His hero is an ordinary person who “surrenders his soul” without grasping at anybody else’s rights.
His answers on personal attributes attest to a life dedicated to teaching. “Seeing my children and students produce works that benefit society,” is his dream for happiness.
Davutoğlu sees his most important deficiency as failing to organize his time, always undertaking several tasks at the same time, he does not give enough time for his family. Dropping the pencil to take a long walk at a critical point in a theoretical work, is his most fun, bad habit.
