A 37 year-old Turk living in the German city of Coburg was caught attempting to sell two counterfeit Picasso paintings for five million Euros. The Turkish national, who bought the paintings in 1993 for 300 Deutsche Marks, had been under surveillance by local police for some time.
According to a statement from Coburg police, the accused and his accomplices “rented a gallery to sell the two paintings in order to appear more serious. They drove around Coburg in luxury cars. They showed the two paintings to undercover officers in their homes.”
The two accomplices, Hungarian and Azerbaijani nationals, admitted that the paintings were counterfeits and were therefore released awaiting trial. The Turkish national, continuing to argue that the paintings were original Picassos even while he was being interviewed by police, is being kept in custody while he awaits trial. The paintings have been valued at 500 Euros.
