Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking yesterday in Ankara before an AK parliamentary group, reserved sharp words for France, whose parliament is preparing to vote tomorrow on a bill which would make it illegal to public deny the so-called Armenian genocide.

Erdogan called on France yesterday to "look at what it had done in Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Cameroon, Guineau, Chad, Dijibouti, Ruwanda, and Benin," going on to note:

"The ridiculous allegations which are being used today in France as domestic political ingredients are as anathema to the reality of history as they are to reasonability and good sense. The EU, which was formed after great human pain, must absolutely take a stance against France's lack of good judgement at this juncture. For France to make an historical lie into a law is a serious blow to the EU's most basic values."

Erdogan went on: "France is trying to make a lesson out of a problem between Turkey and Armenia. But the world is no longer a campus belonging to colonialists. These machines of lies and slander should look at their own histories. If their hearts are strong enough to talk about their own histories.....Let them look at their own histories through the 20th century in Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Cameroon, Guineau, Chad, Dijibouti, Ruwanda, and Benin."
