Yesterday in Hakkari's Yuksekove province, nearly 40 thousand people attended the funeral of 3 men, Islam Bartin, Ergin Mengec, and Abdulhalik Geylani, who were killed Tuesday during clashes there while protesting earlier violence in the Semdinli region. Throughout the funeral procession, Turkish air force F-16s flew over the city in the show of force.
On the morning of the funerals, Yuksekova's businesses one by one shut their doors and barred them, closing in anticipation of violence throughout the afternoon. DEHAP Mayor Tekce went from business to business however, requesting that they open their doors in a show of faith that peace would prevail. The owners listened to Mayor Tekce's request, and the businesses remained opened through the day.
Following the mosque services for the men, the bodies were carried in coffins wrapped in the yellow, green, and red flags through the town to a graveyard 3 kilometers away. Despite the participation of local DEHAP officials in the ceremony, it was also noted that PKK banners were opened and waved
