ISTANBUL - An article denying the Holocaust and defining Jews as a "herd of grasshoppers" was removed from the governing Justice and Development Party's, or AKP, Web site, the daily Radikal reported Friday.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, "Anti-Semitism is a crime against humanity," but has not made his voice heard at AKP’s Ankara branch, Radikal wrote. The article was removed after Radikal’s Tarık Işık discovered it and contacted party officials before submitting his story on the issue.
The article, titled "Promised Land -- Palestine," made no mention of the publication date or author. The article claimed some of Adolf Hitler’s close aids were Jewish. "The claims that Hitler incinerated and carried mass killings against Jews do not match historic facts. Those who died were killed to ensure that others migrated to the Palestinian territory," Radikal quoted the article as saying.
The chairman of AKP's Ankara branch, Halis Bilge, told Radikal he was not aware of the article, adding that it was likely added by someone who hacked into the site at www.akparti.org.tr/ankara/.
İsmet Berkan, editor in chief of Radikal, wrote that the deputy head of the AKP who is the creator of all the party Web sites, Reha Denemeç, can easily find the time that article was added to the site and the user if he wanted.
"Does the AKP Ankara branch know the denial of the Jewish genocide is one of the clearest expressions of enmity against Jews? Of course they know," Berkan wrote. "How could the great Ankara branch of the ruling party publish an inhuman article like that without knowing its meaning?"
The article said English invaders were in close cooperation with Zionist organizations and tried to encourage Jews to migrate to Palestine, but Jews were not following the calls.
"But in 1933 a Nazi storm started to blew in Europe. Rumors spread that Hitler killed Jews in masses. At the same time Hitler’s men started to kill some Jews and put their bodies in trucks to display in Jewish neighborhoods and threatened them with a similar end if they didn’t leave the place. After that incident Jews were like a herd of grasshoppers moving onto Palestinian land," the article said.
