MANİSA - The problem regarding the repossession of the Ottoman-period Rum Mehmet Pasha Bazaar in Manisa in the Aegean region has been solved. The İzmir Monuments Committee has approved the renovation plans for the historical historical monument.
The restoration will begin in May, said Erdinç Karaköse, the director of Provincial Culture and Tourism.
Rum Mehmet Pasha Bazaar was constructed by Mehmet Pasha, one of Mehmed the Conqueror’s commanders. The bazaar was designed to generate income for the mosque and madrasah, or the Muslim theological school, in Istanbul’s Üsküdar district in the 1400s. Today, the historic monument is used as storage area for craftsmen.
The decision to restore the bazaar was made in 2005 after the repossession process had already begun. The heirs to the monument received 400,000 Turkish Liras in compensation for the bazaar.
During the repossession process, a new project was prepared for the restoration of the bazaar. But because the repossession was not concluded, the İzmir Monuments Committee did not approve the restoration project.
With the situation now resolved, the committee just approved the project, which means that the restoration will begin soon. The historic covered bazaar will definitely contribute to the sustenance of Manisa’s city history, Karaköse said. "We initiated the restoration of the historical Rum Mehmet Pasha Bazaar in 2005 with the contributions of various trade associations in the city."
"We expect restoration work to finish in one year," he added.
