ANKARA - Accompanied by a crowd of deputies, government officials and businessmen, President Abdullah Gül embarked yesterday on a visit to the Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

"Central Asia is undoubtedly one of the most important issues of Turkish politics. We’ve always attached importance to our relations and cooperation with the countries in the region with whom we have common historic and cultural bonds," Gül told reporters at Ankara’s Esenboğa Airport before departing for the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek.

The president said his visit to the two countries would offer a unique opportunity to strengthen ties. He is expected to meet with the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Kurmanbek Bakiev and Imamali Rahman. In Bishkek, he will address the Kyrgyz legislature and meet with Turkish citizens and businessmen operating there.
