An editorial by in yesterday's British Guardian newspaper has invoked a comparison made by a French diplomat that Turkey's current role is akin to being the EU's mistress, noting that while the EU does not want to lose Turkey, it also refuses to marry Turkey. The editorial, written by Geoffrey Wheatcroft, also asserts that while Turkey's membership into the EU will not take place anytime soon, it is also not entirely impossible.

"Every time Turkey crosses a new hurdle, Europe will find another for it"

The editorial by Wheatcroft also notes that whether or not the Turks like it, there are still a host of new reforms that are necessary to carry out before EU acceptance. The writer also points out that every time Turkey crosses another hurdle, Europe will put another one before it. The editorial notes that the real question with Turkey's proposed EU membership is not one of culture, economy, or religion, but instead of geography, and whether the EU is willing to expand its borders as far as the edge of Iraq.
