NICOSIA - Greek Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has resigned his post as leader of the communist-rooted Akel party to concentrate on talks to reunify the island.
Christofias told a party congress Saturday that the obligations of the presidency prevent him from fulfilling his role as party leader to the "desired degree." He and Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat started reunification talks in September.
