Arif Mardin was a ‘seyyid’, that is, he was a descendent of the Prophet Mohammed. The Mardin’s, whose former surname was Azrakizade, became one of the ‘educated’ families of the Ottoman Empire, and produced many men of letters.
The Mardin family’s vow was to success. They were not to get involved in politics or in military activities, excepting that of the obligatory military service, and nearly all of the members of this family stood by this tradition, becoming influential writers, musicians and academics.Â
