13 business licences and 24 prospecting licences for gold and silver have been allocated in the Kaz Mountains, considered the “lungs” of Turkey. Responding to a question from DTP MP Selahattin Demirtaş, Hilmi Güler, the minister of enegy and natural resources, stated that a total of 18 prospecting and eight sales licences have been awarded to firms that want to explore the mineral possibilities of the Kaz Mountains, in western Turkey.

These firms have been given permission to look for gold, silver, copper, zinc and lead, and to establish businesses in the area.

In Balıkesir five business licences and six prospecting licences have been granted, of which eight are for gold, and three are for both gold and silver, Güler added.

Harmful cyanide would not be used in the extraction process should precious minerals be found in the mountains, Güler said. Citing rising environmental awareness and increasing technological possibilities, the minister said that he expects mining companies to take necessary environmental precautions and meet Turkey’s high environmental standards.
