--NOT MAKING THIS A NEWS STORY IS ACTUAL PROBLEM

Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal responded to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who accused the media for making corruption with the Deniz Feneri news story. Baykal said, "Do you think Turkey is so stupid that people would remain silent while such incidents are occurring, the prime minister is daunting?"

--INTERESTING SENTENCE TO UZAN
The punishment to the Young Party (GP) chairman Cem Uzan, who was sentenced to 8 months in prison on charges of insulting Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, was commuted to "control" for five years. According to the sentence, Cem Uzan will be undertake a "anger management" program for three months under the supervision of an expert, and will read five books on the related matter.

--MEDIA CANNOT BE THREATENED
Assessing the statements of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who targeted the Dogan Media Group, Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission Co-Chairman Joost Lagendijk said that prime minister should not threaten the media for publishing bad reports about him.

--OVERSPEED OVERTURNS BUS: 14 KILLED
A passenger bus on route to Iran overturned while traveling at high speed at the Tendurek mountain pass in the eastern province of Agri. Fourteen people were killed and 23 others were injured.

--ERGENEKON WISH
Supreme Court of Appeals President Hasan Gerceker, who spoke at the opening of the Judicial Year, said regarding Operation Ergenekon, "I wish the trial would be completed soon without confusing wrongs with rights and without politicizing the laws, and the real criminals would be punished."

--ANGER MANAGEMENT COURSE AND READING BOOKS, PUNISHMENT FOR UZAN
Young Party (GP) chairman Cem Uzan was sentenced to read five publications about self-improvement in the case that was filed against him on charges of insulting Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. The Court also concluded that Uzan should attend a course of anger management.

--GANGS APPEAR WHEN THERE IS LEGAL VACUUM
President of Court of Appeals Hasan Gerceker, while addressing the opening of the judicial year, stated that gangs took advantage of the vacuum caused by a deviation from the laws. Gerceker also said participation of a broader group of people should be ensured while preparing a new constitution.

--WHAT 140 TONS OF AID! THERE WAS NOT EVEN A PACK OF MACARONI
The "aid receipt", which German prosecutors in the Deniz Feneri case questioned the validity of has been proved a lie, Vatan daily reported after its investigation. The village headman claimed to have received the tons of food aid said "it was all a lie."

--ONE MORE STEP TO EUROPE WITHOUT VISA
Turkish citizen Mehmet Dari, who entered Britain illegally and opened a workplace, won his 6-year legal struggle to avoid deportation. The European Court of Justice took the additional protocol, dated 1973, as a basis for it decision and ruled that Dari should not be deported, and thus Dari was also awarded a residence permit.

--INVESTIGATION INTO ERGENEKON PROSECUTOR OZ
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin said they had collected many tip-offs against Istanbul Public Prosecutor Zekeriya Oz who carried out Ergenekon investigation. Sahin said, "Inspectors are currently investigating the matter. Whatever is necessary will be done according to the report."

--TRAFFIC DISASTER IN AGRI
A passenger bus, which was going from the eastern province of Van to Iran, overturned in the eastern province of Agri. Seventeen people of Iranian origin were killed in the accident. Also 31 people were injured.

--TERROR CLAIMS MARTYRS EVERY DAY
Before the pain of three soldiers and three village guards --who were killed in Semdinli town of the southeastern province of Hakkari by terrorists two days ago-- abaded, PKK terrorists targeted a gendarmerie team in the eastern province of Elazig. Private Ali Yuksel was killed in the attack.

--YOUNGSTERS AT SCHOOLS
The new year in elementary and high schools in Turkey started yesterday with attendance of 14 million students and 622,000 teachers. Some students fainted due to hot weather, some students hugged each other, and some students learned that their school was still under construction. Children of agriculture workers are still in the fields.

--COURT OF APPEALS: RELIGIOUS RULES CAN BE REINTERPRETED
Speaking at the opening of the Judicial Year, Hasan Gerceker, president of the Court of Appeals, said, "Religious rules cannot be basis for state activities. The state is neutral regarding religious beliefs. That's where secularism intersects with freedom of conscience."

YENI SAFAK
--THEY HAVE SOLD DOGAN OUT
Dogan Media Group shares dropped sharply at the Istanbul Stock Exchange after the sharp response from Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to Aydin Dogan. Turkish and foreign investors refrained from purchasing shares of Dogan and continuously sold Dogan shares yesterday.

--WE WILL NOT VIOLATE MONTREUX
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza commented on the crisis in the Caucasus in an interview with Yeni Safak. Bryza said they described the crisis in Georgia as a tragic mistake of Russia, and noted that they would not violate Montreux while sending aid to the Black Sea via the Turkish straits. He said the Nabucco project was not negatively affected by the crisis and they wished the project would be completed soon.
