--ISN'T IT SAME AS 301?
After Labor Party Chairman Dogu Perincek, three Turks who said that "Armenian allegations regarding the incidents of 1915 are an imperialist lie" were also imprisoned by a Swiss court. These three Turks were interrogated foreight hours because they had expressed their thoughts. While European authorities ask Turkey to lift Article 301 of Turkish Penal Code on the ground that it constitutes an obstacle before freedom of thought, Switzerland has sent three Turks to prison for expressing their thoughts.

--KURDS SUFFERED FROM DISCRIMINATION IN PAST, GUL
In an interview with German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, President Abdullah Gul said many Kurds had suffered from discrimination due to their origins in the past and they had not been allowed to speak and write in Kurdish. "Today there is a significant change. Kurds' cultural rights have been strengthened," Gul stated.

--ERGENEKON MARATHON
The court will begin hearing the Ergenekon case later today. The 2,455-page indictment will be completely read out if one of the 86 suspects demands it. Even such a thing could take a month. In the indictment, the suspects are accused of establishing a terrorist organization, carrying out preparatory efforts for a coup d'etat, inciting people for armed uprising, staging bomb attack on the Cumhuriyet newspaper's office in Istanbul, carrying out an armed attack on members of the Council of State and possession of top-secret documents.

--GUL SPEAKS TO GERMAN DER SPIEGEL ON HEADSCARF
President Abdullah Gul said in an interview with the Der Spiegel newspaper that the discussions about headscarf was related with Turkey's
democratization process. "It is the personal preference of a woman whether or not to wear a headscarf. Families do not make this a problem. Problem emerges since politicians try to make it a cultural matter," he said.

"The Market - A Tale of Trade" by Ben Hopkins won the Best Film Award at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Dervis Zaim was presented with the Best Director Award with "Dot". Tayanc Ayaydin won the Best Actor Award with his performance in the "The Market - A Tale of Trade" while the Best Actress Award went to Nurgul Yesilcay.

--FREEDOMS WILL BE ENHANCED
Foreign Minister Ali Babacan commented on debates on freedom of press in Turkey. "Turkey is a country deepening its democracy, and taking each year the exercise of basic rights and freedoms a step forward with the reforms it is implementing. Of course the exercise of basic rights also covers the press," said Babacan.

--SAHIN DENIES MALTREATMENT OF HEAD TERRORIST
Minister of Justice Mehmet Ali Sahin denied allegations that head of terrorist organization Abdullah Ocalan was being maltreated. "I have looked into the allegations myself. They are not true," said Sahin.

--WE DON'T TURN OUR BACK ON IMF, UNAKITAN
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan had a meeting with representatives from Turkish media in Istanbul and replied to several questions. Asked whether a new stand-by deal would be signed with the IMF, Unakitan said, "we never turn our back on the IMF. If our country's interests necessitate a deal with the Fund, then we do whatever necessary."

--YESILCAY GETS BEST ACTRESS AWARD
Nurgul Yesilcay received the best actress award at 45th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Yesilcay was awarded for her role in "Vicdan" (Conscience) directed by Erden Kiral.

--ERGENEKON CASE IS BEGINNING
The hearing of the Ergenekon case, where 86 people --46 of whom are under custody-- are to be tried, will begin today at the Silivri Prison. Istanbul High Criminal Court no:13 will start hearing the case after the indictees are identified, and the 2,455 pages long indictment is read out.

The indictment prepared by prosecutors of the probe, Zekeriya Oz, Nihat Taskin and Mehmet Ali Pek, accuses the editor in chief of Cumhuriyet, Ilhan Selcuk, Ret. Gen Veli Kucuk, Labor Party leader Dogu Perincek, Ret. Cap. Muzaffer Tekin and former Istanbul University President Kemal Alemdaroglu of being the high ranking leaders of a terrorist organization.

--INDUSTRIALISTS COMPLAIN
Istanbul Industry Chamber's Chairman Tanil Kucuk said the real sector in Turkey had been distressed for the past two years and warned that Turkey would be overwhelmed if the financial crisis spread to the real sector. Kucuk pointed out that certain state banks recalled the loans and said, "if there are mistakes, the real sector should not be the one to pay for it."

According to a report by the Goldman Sachs, one of the leading banks in the world, Turkey will be one of the countries attracting the highest amount of investments after the current global crisis. The bank said that growth would slow down and prices of foreign currency and real estate would change in Turkey as an impact of the crisis.

--ANOTHER BAD NEWS FROM EAST
Private Fikret Yukseler, who was seriously injured when PKK terrorists opened fire on security forces in the eastern province of Tunceli on October 14, has died. The family of the young soldier strongly condemned terrorism.

Eighty-six suspects will appear at the court in Silivri later today under the Ergenekon case. During the first hearing, 2,455-page indictment or some documents will be read out. Some non-governmental organizations are expected to hold demonstrations in front of the prison. Some will extend support to the suspects while the others will protest them.

--"WE WILL PROTECT REAL SECTOR AGAINST CRISIS"
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan said that Turkey's finance system was quite sound. "Our target is to protect the real sector. We allocated 7.1 billion YTL to encourage the sector. The state will pay a part of loan interests of the real sector," he said.
