 -- IS HE THE OBAMA OF GERMANY?

German-born Cem Ozdemir, whose father and mother came to Germany as guest workers, was elected the co-chairman of the Greens Party. Ozdemir, a European parliamentarian who will chair the Greens Party with Claudia Roth, has been the first politician of Turkish descent to become the chairman of a party in Germany.

 

His success that came after the wind of change prevailing in Europe following Barack Obama in the United States would inspire 2.7 million Turks living in Germany. His election slogan was "Yes we Cem."

-- "WE ARE SO CLOSE TO A SOLUTION WITH IMF"

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan spoke favorably about a deal with the International Monetary Fund for the first time and said, "We are so close to a solution with the IMF."

 

However, he said there was no change in his complaints about the IMF but added that both parties were trying to clear them away.

European Parliament member Cem Ozdemir was elected as co-chairman of the German Alliance 90/Greens Party. Ozdemir has become the first party chairman of foreign origin in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Delegates applauded Ozdemir and other co-chairperson Claudia Roth for minutes.

-- ERDOGAN: WE MAY USE FED RESOURCE

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan gave the signal that he was positive to use loan from the U.S. Federal reserve. Upon a question whether Turkey would ask for loan from the FED, Erdogan said, "We would like to think about a mid-term loan, not a short-term one."

Cem Ozdemir, a member of the European Parliament, has been elected the co-chairman of the Greens Party in Germany.

 

A total of 79.2 percent of party delegates voted for Ozdemir, who has been the first German of Turkish descent to chair a political party in Europe.

-- WATERS GET WARM IN MEDITERRANEAN

Greece claimed that a Norwegian vessel, which was exploring oil for Turkey off Kas (a town of Turkish Mediterranean province of Antalya), violated Greek territorial waters. A Greek war ship, which came to the zone, wanted the Norwegian ship --escorted by Turkish frigate "Gediz"—to leave its territorial waters. TPAO (Turkish Petroleum Corp.) said that the ship was exploring oil within Turkish territorial waters.

-- FIRST TURKISH PARTY LEADER IN GERMANY

Cem Ozdemir, a member of European Parliament, was elected co-chairman to German Alliance 90/Greens Party. Ozdemir has been the member of the party since 1981. He won 617 of 770 votes of delegates. Ozdemir is the first Turkish leader in German political life.

-- IMF DAYS LOOMING AGAIN

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who was reluctant to make a new deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), retreated in the United States.

 

Following a meeting with IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, officials said that Turkey and the IMF agreed to continue works. Strauss-Kahn said he was expecting a result soon.

Erdogan said a solution was close and the IMF assistance would be helpful to weather the crisis.

-- SUPPORT FROM ERDOGAN TO IRAN

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who attended the G-20 summit in the United States, sent the message to Barack Obama that the world was waiting for peace. Erdogan repeated the mediation proposal of Turkey between Iran and the U.S. Erdogan, referring to countries like Britain, Israel and France, said that countries which were against Iran's producing nuclear weapons should not have their own nuclear weapons too.

During yesterday's general assembly meeting of German Alliance 90/Greens Party, Turkish descent Cem Ozdemir was elected co-chairman of the party. Cem Ozdemir is the first person of foreign descent who became the leader of a party in the history of Germany.

-- CYPRUS HAS BEEN OUR MOTHERLAND FOR 450 YEARS

The 25th foundation anniversary of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was celebrated with ceremonies yesterday. President Mehmet Ali Talat said that Turkish Cypriots had been governing themselves in the island for 450 years. "It is our duty to maintain the land which is our motherland," he added.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who is in the U.S. for G-20 meeting, attended the dinner which was hosted in honor of participants by U.S. President George W. Bush. Erdogan, speaking to U.S. journalists, said, "I am saying that let's become enemies of hostility, and hate hatred."
