Fenerbahce knocked off Spain's Sevilla to qualify for quarter finals in European Champion's League and became one of the top 8 teams. Fenerbahce were defeated 2-3 in the second leg in Spain. Since Fenerbahce won the first leg 3-2, the two teams played an extra time. And Fenerbahce reached quarter finals after penalties thanks to
 goalkeeper Volkan Demirel. Three of other teams qualified to quarter finals in the European Champions League are Spain's Barcelona and England's Arsenal and Manchester United.

-- "EVEN IF IT IS POLITICAL SYMBOL"

Democratic Society Party (DTP) responded with "headscarf approach" to Justice & Development (AK) Party that aims to take municipalities from DTP in the upcoming local elections. In a parliamentary meeting on Tuesday, there was a composition of headscarf and "yellow-red-green" colors which are identified with terrorist organization PKK. Three young women who attended the meeting sat side by side wearing those headscarves at the meeting hall.

Devlet Bahceli, chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), said statements of the Turkish General Staff may give prestige and image to PKK which it did not deserve. General Staff last night released a very strong statement which was perceived as response to Bahceli's words. General Staff statement said, "remarks --which were made on March 4th, 2008 by circles other than the press-- target an institution that fights terrorism and gives martyrs, and those remarks are unfair and worthless attacks."

Fenerbahce soccer team of Turkey qualified for the quarter finals in the European Champions League and became Turkey's pride. In the historic match, Fenerbahce toppled Spain's Sevilla team, considered a European giant, with a 3-2 win on penalties.

Fenerbahce football club defeated Spain's Sevilla after penalty shoot-out on Tuesday night. With this victory, Fenerbahce reached quarter finals in the Champions League. A draw will be made on March 14th to determine Fenerbahce's opponents in the quarter finals.

-- A LARGE SCALE OPERATION AGAINST TERRORIST PKK WITHIN TURKEY

After having launched a ground operation against terrorist organization PKK in north of Iraq, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) began a large scale operation against PKK within Turkey. Turkish troops, backed by Sikorsky helicopters, are searching for terrorists in provinces of Tunceli, Erzincan and Bingol.

-- ZAPSU RESIGNS FROM AK PARTY

Cuneyd Zapsu, a founding member of the Justice and Development (AK) Party and a member of the AK Party Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK), resigned from the AK Party MKYK. Zapsu indicated that he resigned as MKYK member due to his busy schedule. Zapsu was also serving as a foreign relations adviser to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

-- 'VETOED' WELCOME TO TALABANI

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is scheduled to arrive in Ankara on Friday. Talabani's visit to Turkey is described as a working trip. Talabani will not be welcomed at full military honors. The national anthems of Turkey and Iraq will not be played for Talabani. Talabani will not visit the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. President
 Abdullah Gul will not host an official luncheon or dinner at the Cankaya Palace for Talabani.

-- OPERATION CONTROVERSY

Turkish General Staff said statements of opposition leaders Deniz Baykal and Devlet Bahceli harm Turkish Armed Forces. General Staff said "remarks targeting Turkish Armed Forces are unjust and worthless attacks on an institution that fights terrorism and has martyrs." "Turkish Armed Forces which has never preferred to engage in polemics with politicians and political institutions is wanted to be set as a target for such meaningless attacks," it said. "These attacks harm its determination on fight against terrorism more than traitors," it added.

-- PKK TO BE STOPPED IN IRAQ

Turkish military changed its approach to cross-border operations. Turkish Armed Forces had carried out significant part of past cross-border operations using heavy weapons until the recent ground operation into north of Iraq. Turkish military plans to launch operations with special forces and commandos into regions in the north
 of Iraq where PKK is sheltered to sneak into Turkey. Armed Forces will conduct operations against terrorist groups spotted at a certain distance to Turkish border. With this plan, Turkish Armed Forces aims to prevent not only terrorist attacks but also terrorists' plans.

As Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to take "economic, political, social" steps to find a solution to Kurdish problem, chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahceli qualified "civilian solution" remarks as "treachery project".

-- CELIK: COMPULSORY RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION TO CONTINUE WITH CURRENT CURRICULUM

Turkish Minister of National Education Huseyin Celik reacted against the decision of Council of State on compulsory religious instruction and said "nothing will change. The curriculum has been renewed." Jurists said the decision of the Council of State that, "religious instruction can not be compulsory with this current content" will be considered as precedent. In this case, any student who applies the court, may be exempt from the religious instruction.

-- NASA'S PRIDE RETURNS TO TURKEY

Neva Ciftcioglu, a Turk in NASA, returns to Turkey to reverse the brain drain. Associate Prof. Ciftcioglu, whose written research was thrown out in Ankara University, became the first foreign citizen associate professor in Finland where she went in tears. Ciftcioglu, who also became the first Turkish citizen assigned in NASA, returns home with her projects.

General Staff strongly reacted against the criticisms on withdrawal of the troops that joined the ground operation in north of Iraq. In a statement aired on its web-page, General Staff said, "unjust and worthless attacks harmed the Turkish Armed Forces more than the traitors."

In line with the depositions of the suspects of "Ergenekon (a criminal gang)", documents, blood samples, DNA tests and autopsy report related to murder of businessman Uzeyir Garih were seized in some addresses.
