-- "WE CAN PRODUCE BETTER WINE THAN PETRUS"
Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay said that Turkey could produce better wines than Petrus after worldwide famous wine critic, journalist and editor of wine literature, Jancis Mary Robinson, eulogized Turkish wines. "Why shouldn't we have a wine more qualified than Petrus? We can do this," Gunay said.

-- NEW MASTER OF ISTANBUL: BUTTON
Jenson Button of Brawn GP won the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix, bringing to an end the run of Australia's legendary Mark Webber who won all the previous three Turkish Grand Prix races.

-- ISTANBUL LEG OF F1 WAS "QUIET"
This season's flash name Brawn GP driver Jenson Button won the 7th leg of the Formula 1 season in the ING Turkey Grand Prix in Istanbul on Sunday. However, interest in the race at Istanbul Park circuit --which caused widespread debate during the construction phase -- was very low. The empty stands were covered with colorful canvas. World-known model Naomi Campbell was also in Istanbul to watch the race.

-- ONE VILLAGE GUARD KILLED IN ULUDERE
Three village guards from the same family, who went to rural area to collect wood in Uludere town of the southeastern province of Sirnak, stepped on a land mine planted by PKK terrorists. One village guard was killed while two others were injured.

-- SANKO TO INVEST $2 BILLION IN ENERGY
Turkish Sanko Holding's President of the Executive Board, Abdulkadir Konukoglu, said that Turkey would emerge from the economic crisis as of September. "We will make investments worth at least $2 billion in energy in the next five years," Konukoglu said.

-- CRUDE OIL PRODUCED IN 25 WELLS EXCAVATED IN 2008
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said that crude oil was produced in 25 wells that drilled in 2008. "From the total of 30 wells drilled in 2008, one is being used to produce natural gas," Yildiz said. The majority of wells from which crude oil is drilled are the Marmara region.

-- SIGNS OF RECOVERY IN TURKISH ECONOMY
British daily, the Sunday Times, wrote that the green shoots of an economic recovery were starting to appear, but the business world was still anxiously awaiting an upturn. "After the convulsions of last autumn, when the world's banking system came close to meltdown, signs of recovery in the Markit surveys began to appear first in emerging economies, notably China, India, Turkey and Brazil," the daily said.

-- AKP'S VICTORY IN MINI-ELECTIONS
Local elections were held again in seven towns and 23 hamlets following a decision of the Higher Electoral Board. The ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, won 12 municipalities while the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party, or CHP, gained 10 municipalities.

-- QUIET FORMULA 1
British driver Jenson Button of Brawn GP won the Formula 1 ING Turkey Grand Prix. It was his first victory in Istanbul and sixth this season. Red Bull team's drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were ranked second and third respectively. Last three year's Istanbul champion Felipe Massa, Ferrari driver, was unable to take a place. A total of 32,000 people watched the three-day organization which failed to attract interest from the Turkish president and prime minister, or foreign statesmen.

-- ERDOGAN: WE ARE COMFORTABLE WITH IT
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan replied to criticisms of the main opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP, leader Deniz Baykal regarding Deniz Feneri investigation. Erdogan said, "we do not have any problem with Deniz Feneri or any other thing. We are comfortable with that issue (Deniz Feneri case)."

-- AKP AND CHP LEAD ELECTION RESULTS
Local elections were repeated in 30 regions of Turkey on Sunday. According to the Higher Board of Election, or YSK, the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, won 12 mayoral seats, the Republican People's Party, or CHP, won 10 seats, the Democrat Party, or DP, won three seats, the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, won two seats, while the Democratic Society Party, or DTP, and Motherland Party, or ANAVATAN, each secured a seat. The election results in Sorgun town of the Central Anatolian province of Yozgat have not been announced yet.

-- LAST 7 DAYS OF REDUCED SPECIAL CONSUMPTION TAX
Automobile sales in Turkey increased by 30 percent between March and May thanks to a reduction in Special Consumption Tax, or OTV, by the government. There are only seven more days left before OTV rate returns to its previous standing. However, most auto sellers expect the duration of the reduced OTV to be extended.

-- LAND MINE FIELDS ARE SEA OF OIL
Journalist-writer Lutfu Akdogan, who traveled through land mine infested fields to Syria with smugglers in 1950s, claimed that there was oil in the fields between Cizre, town of the southeastern province of Sirnak, and Iskenderun town in the southern province of Hatay. He also claimed that the U.S. objected to Turkey and Syria’s exploration for oil in those fields.

Brawn GP driver Jenson Button won the Formula 1 Turkey Grand Prix. The large absence of support that resulted in empty stands at Istanbul Park circuit, which has a capacity of 130,000 people, carried the removal of the Turkey leg of the F1 season to the agenda.
