-- "NOTHING CAN BE KEPT SECRET"

Speaking about the document claimed to have been prepared by the General Staff, President Abdullah Gul said, "Turkey is a transparent country. If there is any wrongdoing, the jurisdiction will bring it into the light. Nothing can be kept secret in Turkey any more."

 

-- REPUBLIC RALLY IN IZMIR

The second Republic Rally was held in the western province of Izmir with the participation of nearly a 10,000 people. The first rally in 2007 coincided with the Mother's Day while the second was held on the Father's Day. There was a fall in the number of participants.

-- LIQUOR PRODUCERS CRITICIZE NEW LIMITATIONS ON ADVERTISEMENTS

A new legal framework that brings certain limitations on advertisements relating to alcoholic drinks has prompted a strong wave of criticism from producers. Brewer Efes Pilsen's boss Tuncay Ozilhan said that in movie theaters alcohol adverts could not be screened until after the film ended. "The film ends and the viewers leave the theatre. Who would stay to see the advertisement? This is a tricky way of banning adverts for alcohol," Ozilhan said. Sibel Kutman, director of the wine maker Doluca, said producers' views had not been taken into consideration.

 

-- SCHOLAR SAYS TURKEY SHOULD EXTEND "SOME KIND OF APOLOGY" TO ARMENIANS

Prof. Fikret Adanir, a Turkish scholar from Istanbul's Sabanci University, said despite not actually labeling the incidents of 1915 as "genocide," Turkey should extend some kind of apology to Armenians. "The state made a terrible mistake in 1915. A way must be found to reach out to Armenians, but at the same, the tragedy that Muslims suffered in the Balkans and the Caucasus should be underlined," Adanir told daily Milliyet.

-- ERDOGAN TO TAKE BRIEF REST

Deputy Premier and State Minister Bulent Arinc said Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan would rest for a few days after he cancelled a planned trip to Greece due to high blood pressure. "He is fine. He is just a bit weary from the high temperatures and fatigue. He is going to take a few days off," Arinc told reporters.

-- DOUBLE PROOF TO DOUBLE SIGNATURE

It has been determined by police and gendarmerie reports that the colonel, who allegedly wrote the document aiming at a "conspiracy against democracy," used two different signatures. After criminal laboratories of the gendarmerie released a report stating that "the signatures were alike," the police department's criminal report also said that the signature on the report on "fight against religious fundamentalism" belonged to Col. Dursun Cicek. Criminal laboratories of the police department compared Cicek's signatures on 21 documents with the signature on the "religious fundamentalism" report and the signature on his testimony.

Chinese Ambassador in Ankara Gong Xiaosheng said that Turkey could have a relationship with the European Union, or EU, and Asia at the same time. In an interview with daily Sabah, the Chinese ambassador said that his country desired to share its success formula with Turkey.

-- WEAK RALLY IN IZMIR

After a 100,000 people gathered in the western province of Izmir in a rally on May 13, 2007, there only 10,000 gathered for a similar organization yesterday. The rally in 2007 coincided with Mothers' Day and yesterday's event coincided with Fathers' Day. Prominent painter Bedri Baykam said that the participation in yesterday's rally could not be compared with the previous one since it was held in June and people were on vacation.

-- DRIVER FALLS ASLEEP

The death toll increased to 11 in Saturday night's traffic accident near Kizilcahamam town of the capital city of Ankara. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the accident was the result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel. The driver of the minibus, which was carrying university students back from a school picnic in Abant, was injured in the accident.

-- PROTEST RALLY IN IZMIR

A large crowd of demonstrators gathered Sunday at a rally in Izmir's Gundogdu Square to protest the government. The rally was organized by a group named "Alliance Platform for the Republic." People carried Turkish flags and posters of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

-- TURKISH KEBAB MAKER HITS DUBAI

Turkish kebab maker Ali Akkas opened a branch of his Kosebasi Restaurant in Dubai after opening restaurants in Brazil and Bahrain. Akkas's Kosebasi was named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. Kosebasi's next destination is Qatar, says Akkas who wants to open 20 new restaurants in Gulf countries within five years.

-- LAW IS FUNCTIONING, LET'S GO BACK TO AGENDA, PRESIDENT GUL

Commenting on the "coup" document, President Abdullah Gul said that other important issues on the agenda should not be forgotten. "Turkey is a transparent country. If there is something wrong, it will be brought to light with the help of the law and the necessary actions will be taken. If some people carry out such acts intentionally, then actions will be taken against them as well. Nothing remains hidden," Gul said. He also said judicial mechanisms were properly functioning, adding that the other important issues on Turkey's agenda such as development, reforms and democracy, should not be neglected.

 

-- A LEGEND FROM SOUTH KOREA

Borusan Music Festival will host a young legend from the Far East, South Korean cellist Han-Na Chang, who was presented with two awards at the 5th Rostropovich Cello Contest in Paris when she was only 11. Chang will give a concert at Hagia Irene tonight together with Bilkent Symphony Orchestra.

-- "NOTHING CAN REMAIN SECRET ANY MORE," GUL SAYS

President Abdullah Gul spoke on Sunday for the first time about an alleged military plot to "besmirch the AKP and the Gulen community." "There is an ongoing legal process about the issue. Turkey is a transparent country. If there is a misdeed it would eventually come to light by the hand of justice. Nothing can remain secret any more in Turkey," Gul told reporters.

 

-- ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL TO START

Istanbul is set to host for the 16th time its international Jazz Festival on June 2-15. World-famous musicians will participate in the festival in over 30 concerts featuring among others Marcus Miller, Melody Gardot, Joe Sample and Randy Crawford.
