-- SKETCH LINKS OFFICER TO HIDDEN HAND GRENADES

Police and gendarmerie forensic teams have found out that a sketch showing the place of a number of buried hand grenades were authentic and it belonged to a lieutenant colonel who was arrested under the Ergenekon probe. The hand grenades were unearthed in the Zir Valley in capital Ankara. Police impounded the sketch at Lieut. Col. Mustafa Donmez's house. Donmez have denied the sketch was not of his making and grenades were not his. But the two forensic reports have shown that the sketch had been drawn by Donmez. Reports also said that part of the hand grenades had been manufactured in Turkey and delivered to the Land Forces in 1981 and 1984.

-- ISTANBUL-IZMIR HIGHWAY TO CUT TRAVEL TIME BY THREE HOURS

A tender was held on Friday for the construction of a highway between Istanbul and the Aegean province of Izmir that would reduce travel time by three hours from six and a half hours. The tender was won by consortium of Turkish companies and an Italian construction group. The project also includes the construction of one of the world's longest bridges that would stretch over the Gulf of Izmit.

The Nurol-Ozaltin-Makyol-Astaldi-Yuksel-Gocay joint venture offered the shortest period of construction and operation in the tender for highway connecting Istanbul with the western province of Izmir with 22 years and four months. The project will enable people take 421 kilometres between Istanbul and Izmir in just 3.5 hours.

 

-- "THE INTELLIGENCE REVEALED IT"

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the document of "Action Plan for Fight Against Fundamentalism" was revealed by the intelligence. "I am not obliged to search whether a document about my political party was genuine or not," he said. Meanwhile, it was reported that the signature on the document was similar with the signature of Colonel Dursun Cicek. Cicek will give a testimony to the prosecutors carrying out the Ergenekon probe.

State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said that it was shameful to discuss such documents in the 21st century. "This is a serious infidelity against our democracy," he said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "I am not obliged to search whether a document about my political party was genuine or not."

High-ranging army officials said that the document in the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office was not original, but a copy. They have been searching for the genuine document.

-- MILITARY PROSECUTOR CONFIRMS BOMBS SKETCH BELONGED TO OFFICER

Office of military prosecutor have said a sketch showing the whereabouts of some buried hand grenades, which were discovered under the Ergenekon probe, had belonged to a lieutenant colonel. The military prosecutor said Friday the sketch was drawn by Lieut. Col. Yarbay Donmez who was arrested after police found the sketch in Donmez's country house along with a number of hand grenades and unearthed a number of others in the Zir Valley in capital Ankara. The prosecutor said the hand grenades had been delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces in 1981 and 1984.

 

-- BUSINESS ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR "ANCHOR" FOR FOREIGN FINANCING

Head of a business association in Turkey said the country had needed external anchors to receive foreign financing for economic growth. "How would the private sector create resources needed for economic growth? Foreign finance quarters have always taken seriously external anchors such as the European Union and the IMF," Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag, chairwoman of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD), told a TUSIAD meeting which was also attended by Economy Minister Ali Babacan.

-- KILICDAROGLU CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO REVEAL DOCUMENT

Kemal Kilicdaroglu said that the original document of "Action Plan for Fight Against Fundamentalism" could not be found yet. He called on the government to reveal it. Meanwhile, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc made a harsh statement about the document which is unproved yet. "This is nothing but an infidelity against our people's will, the Constitution and democracy," he said.

 

-- BODY OF PILOT RECOVERED

Body of Tanju Tezgel, pilot of the fire-fighting helicopter which crashed in Milas town of the western province of Mugla, was recovered. Efforts are underway to recover the body of forester Ali Ekin. The fire-fighting helicopter crashed on Thursday while getting water from Geyik Reservoir to put out a forest fire.

-- BUSINESS ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR REFORMS

Chairwoman of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag called for speeding up reforms. "A new world is being established and we are not getting prepared for it because we do not make the reforms we are supposed to make. We have to quit every criticism as a hostility," Yalcindag told a consultation meeting of the TUSIAD.

 

-- BODY OF MISSING PILOT FOUND IN CHOPPER CRASH

Body of a pilot who went missing after a fire-fighting helicopter crashed Thursday into a reservoir in southwestern Turkey, was found on Friday. Divers recovered the body of ret. military pilot Tanju Tezel and efforts were underway to find forest worker Ali Ekin who also went missing after the crash.

A tender was held on Friday for the construction of a 412-km highway between Istanbul and the Aegean province of Izmir which would cut travel time by three hours. A consortium of Turkish companies and an Italian construction group won the $6 billion project.

 

-- TURKISH FRIGATE DEPARTS FOR GULF OF ADEN

A Turkish frigate set sail on Friday and headed for the Gulf of Aden to take part in an international task force to combat piracy. The TGC Gediz Frigate departed from a naval base in Golcuk. The frigate will join the task force on July 1, and it will remain on duty for four months.
