--TURKEY ENTHUSIASTIC BY VICTORY
Turkey defeated the Czech Republic 3-2 and qualified for the quarterfinals in Euro 2008. The Czech team was the only obstacle before Turkey on the road to Vienna. Two goals scored by the Czechs in the 34th and 62nd minutes faded Turkey's hopes. However, the Turkish team thought differently.
Arda Turan scored the first goal in the 75th minute, and the second goal came from Nihat Kahveci in the 88th minute and Turkey thought and hoped much from penalties. However, Nihat scored a third goal in the 90th minute of the match. At that moment, the entire country was euphoric with victory.
--SURPRISE INVITATION
The Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) will host Kemal Dervis, a former Turkish state minister for economy, and the chairmen of three giant labor confederations for the first time in its history. The meeting will take place on June 19.
TUSIAD chairperson Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag called Mustafa Kumlu, chairman of the Turkish Confederation of Labor (Turk-Is); Suleyman Celebi, chairman of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions (DISK); and Salim Uslu, chairman of the Moral Rights Workers' Union (Hak-Is); and invited them to the association's meeting to deliver speeches.
The three chairmen responded positively to the invitation. Also, Kemal Dervis, the United Nations Development Program administrator, will make important remarks about the economy.

Referring to the Constitutional Court's decision to invalidate the amendment about headscarf, Turmen said, "Although the court has not yet disclosed its reasoned verdict, it has the opportunity of making such a comment about the constitution under Articles 4 and 148. This is neither an overstepping of authority nor an intervention in parliament."

--TURKEY KICKS CZECHS OUT OF EURO CHAMPIONSHIP
Turkey made a surprising come back when they scored three goals against the Czechs in 15 minutes in a Group A match on Sunday and made their way into the quarter finals in the European 2008. The Czech team led the game by two goals until the very last moments of the match but Arda and Nihat earned a promising win for the Turkish team. Turkey will play against Croatia on June 20 in the quarter final in Vienna.

Stephen Wall, a senior aide to former British Premier Tony Blair, has said that Turkey would be allowed to join the European Union in 2025 at the earliest. In his new book on the EU and its relations with Britain, Wall said Turkey's membership talks would take ten years with an additional ten years for a preparation period. Wall also said Turkey could make significant contributions to the Union once it complied with the EU's criteria.

Turkey were 0-2 behind in a Euro 2008 group match when Arda Turan scored Turkey's first goal. Arda brought the national team to the quarterfinals hand in hand with Nihat Kahveci and Hamit Altintop. Nihat scored the following two goals with the assists of Hamit in two minutes. Turkey will take on Croatia in the quarterfinal in Vienna on Friday.
--JUSTICE MINISTRY: WE ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO INSTRUCT PROSECUTORS
In a written statement it released on June 13, the Constitutional Court said, "When it is obvious that remarks about the ongoing cases constitute a crime, it is concerning to see that those responsible and authorized are remaining silent." The Justice Ministry accepted the responsibility and announced on Sunday that it had no authority.

--ATTACK ON TURKISH WORKERS IN ASTANA
Nearly 1,500 Kazakh workers attacked Turkish workers with knives and clubs at a construction site in Astana, Kazakhstan. Fifteen Turkish workers were injured in the attack and three are in a critical condition.
--STRIKE AGAINST MURDER
Workers in a shipyard in Tuzla will go on a strike today to protest those who are responsible for the recent deaths of shipyard workers. A number of labor unions, non-governmental organizations and intellectuals extended full support to the strike. A total of 97 workers have died at the shipyard since 1992.

Workers of an Istanbul shipyard compound, where 21 workers were killed in accidents in the last nine months, are set to go on a strike on Monday to protest working conditions. Workers of the shipyards in Tuzla, members of non-governmental organizations and students are set to show support for the strike.
--1.5 MLN STUDENTS IN TURKEY TAKE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAM
A total of 1.5 million high-school graduates took an exam in Turkey on Sunday in bid to find a placement in one of the Turkish universities. The number of candidates was down a 100,000 compared to last year with a higher number of university places available, raising hopes of a tertiary place for the students.

Such a match was not seen before. The Turkish national soccer team was facing defeat by the Czech Republic 2-0, but won the match 3-2 with three goals scored in the last 15 minutes. Thus, the Turkish national team was among the eight top teams in Europe.
The Turkish nation rushed to the streets to celebrate the victory, whereas Europe was bewildered. Even the Czech media defined the team as "extraordinary Turks", and press media announced the victory as breaking news. Turkey will take on Croatia in a quarterfinal match on June 20.

Forbes magazine announced the ten cities that are home to billionaires. Moscow overtook New York, for having the highest number of billionaires residing. New York has a total of 71 billionaires residing in the city.
While 74 billionaires reside in Moscow, including Roman Abramovich and Oleg Deripaska, London has 36 billionaire residents, while Istanbul is ranked the fourth with 34 billionaires.
