--SECRET OIL WAR IN KARPAZÂ

As soon as Cypriot leaders started discussions on "territory," the most sensitive issue of the ongoing Cyprus talks, the Greek Cypriots demanded the Karpaz Peninsula.

 

The Greek Cypriots discovered oil and natural gas reserves worth of $400 billion under the sea in the south of the island and marketed these reserves to American companies. Now, they have their eyes on the region which is in a triangle of Turkey, Syria and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

--MANGO: LIBERAL CRITICISM AGAINST ATATURK OUTDATED

British writer Andrew Mango said Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey, made the nation an important and model country. He said Turkey's importance has not diminished. He also said that liberal people criticized Ataturk for being too authoritarian and not being a democrat, adding that most of these criticisms were outdated.

--MOST EXPENSIVE TURKISH PLAYER

Turkish soccer player Mehmet Topuz, who was purchased in Istanbul in a last minute operation by Fenerbahce soccer team after Besiktas team expressed interest in him, cost the club 9 million euro. Topuz was recorded as the most expensive Turkish player in soccer history. Fenerbahce will pay 2.5 million euro to Topuz annually.

--WILL CAPKIN GO TO ISTANBUL?

The name of Huseyin Capkin, Security Department Director in the western province of Izmir, is being mentioned for the post of director of Istanbul Security Department. Capkin held meetings with Interior Minister Besir Atalay and Security Director General Oguz Kagan Koksal in Ankara yesterday.

--SWINE FLU COULD NOT ENTER

Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay said, "Media wrote news reports saying 'swine flu is in Turkey'. However, those news reports are not true. Thanks to the precautions taken, swine flu was detected in transit passengers, and the necessary action was taken."

Turkish basketball player, who was named "the most improved player" in the NBA where he has played for nine seasons, explained the secret of his success: "My wife and my three-year-old daughter Ela. I return home eagerly after training. I am 30 now, and I will play till I'm 36."

Former Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister Abdullatif Sener, who is back in politics with his own party, the Turkey Party, spoke to German daily Die Welt.

"I have not spoken with Mr. Tayyip Erdogan for a long time. I have the chance to speak with Mr. Abdullah Gul from time to time. Erdogan is not a team player. He does not accept offers. Erich Von Daniken, legendary author of the 1970s with his book "Chariots of Gods" that asserted that aliens taught civilization to humans, was in Istanbul for the 4th UFO Congress.

 

Daniken, whose books have sold 63 million copies, said, "All aliens are friendly. They will show themselves explicitly after 20 years."

--FOUR MORE PEOPLE RELEASED

Four people including Labor Party, or IP, executive Adnan Akfirat were released in the Ergenekon case. Also, the court delegation will announce its decision about combining the case regarding the attack on the Council of State with the Ergenekon case in the next session.

--6TH GRADERS WORKED HARD

The SBS level exam was held yesterday. Nearly 1,100,000 candidates from the 6th grade entered the exam. Students said the questions on Math, English and Turkish were especially difficult.

--COST OF TOPUZ CAUSES DEBATES

The cost of player Mehmet Topuz after he signed Fenerbahce soccer team has sparked widespread debate. Fenerbahce will pay 30 million Turkish lira for the transfer of Topuz.

--LAWSUIT CAN BE FILED

An Ankara court annulled a decision handed down by the prosecutor's office that said it was unnecessary to file a lawsuit against Democratic Society Party, or DTP, Chairman Ahmet Turk who spoke Kurdish at a party meeting in Parliament. The court reached its decision after the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, Group Deputy Chairman Oktay Vural filed a protested to the ruling.

--GET READY FOR VACCINE

As part of actions taken against swine flu, this fall, the Health Ministry will vaccinate 10 million people, including chronic patients, the elderly people and health care professionals.

--TWO MOSQUES AND ONE SCHOOL TO CAMEROON

The Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief, or IHH, has opened two mosques and one school in Cameroon. The facilities pleased the country which has a population of 16 million.

--OSS FOR THE LAST TIME

A total of 1,349,782 students will undertake the OSS university entrance exam today. The OSS exam system will change as of next year. The exam will start at 9:30 a.m. and last for 195 minutes. Some 207,857 people will work as observer during the exam.
