HURRIYET

--WE HAVE JUST STARTED

Turkey beat Switzerland 2-1 in their second match in Euro 2008, which they began with a defeat against Portugal. For the third match on Sunday, Turkey gave the message that they had just started the championship.

--PARLIAMENT'S AWARD TO INALCIK

The parliament decided to grant this year's honor award to historian Professor Halil Inalcik. Also, the parliament will honor 71 institutions, including Turkish foundation for preservation of natural beauties TEMA and persons with awards.

--PACE WARNS BOTH GOVERNMENT AND JUDICIARY

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has criticised the 10 percent electoral threshold and restrictions against the press in Turkey. In its latest democracy report, PACE proposed Turkey to make reforms both in the Constitution and the election system. It also said that Turkey should respect the European Convention on Human Rights while making decisions about closure of political parties.

There are 250 industrial zones in Turkey. But only 37 of them have purification facilities. Wastes in the remaining 213 zones cause pollution and the state is aware of this fact.

--TURKEY WIN VICTORY OVER SWITZERLAND

Turkey, who did not make a good start with the Euro 2008, revived their hopes Wednesday night with a win against Switzerland. Turkey who played against championship co-hosts Switzerland --following a 0-2 defeat against Portugal on June 7th--, fell behind at the 32nd minute with a goal by Hakan Yakin, a player of Turkish origin from the opponent team.

Turkish national team who also struggled against the heavy rain, started playing better in the second half. Turkey made the score even with Semih Senturk's goal in the 57th minute and pushed their opponent out of the championship with a goal by Arda Turan in the added time.

Turkey have to win against Czech Republic in their last game in the group in order to reach quarter finals. Czech Republic lost out to Portugal with a score of 1-3, and with these scores the goal difference between Turkey and Czech Republic was equalised. If this game results with a tie, according to UEFA rules, penalty shoot-out will decide on who are going to qualify to the quarter finals.

--SEMIH AND ARDA SCORE GOALS

Turkey prevented Switzerland from being an obstacle before Euro 2008 championship in their second match, beating them 2-1. Semih Senturk and Arda Turan scored the goals against Switzerland. Now, the only obstacle before another round is the Czech Republic, which Turkey will take on Sunday. If Turkey draw with the Czech Republic, penalty shoot-out will determine the winners.

--ILLEGAL MIGRANTS OF SOMALI ORIGIN ABANDONED TO LAKE CEKMECE

Human traffickers got $1,000 per person from 17 illegal migrants of Somali origin, and toured these people on the Marmara Sea for hours. They abandoned these 17 people, including 10 women, on the bank of the Lake Buyuk Cekmece in Istanbul, telling them that it was a Greek island.

Turkish people who saw the illegal migrants informed the gendarmery forces. The Somali people left their country a month ago by a ship and went to Iraq. Then, they crossed into Turkey.

--FEAR OF FALLING APART

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who fears some of the MPs of his party may join opposition parties or new formations in case Justice and Development Party (AKP) gets closed, wants the parliament to stay open in the summer. Erdogan who said, "Your unity and integrity is very important for me. The train will continue on its track. Who leaves the train can not get back on," covertly warned the MPs.

With this decision, Erdogan plans to make it easier to take a decision for early general elections, in case his party is dissolved. If the parliament recesses, the MPs may not be sympathetic to a decision for early general elections as they did not yet fulfill the two years service required for retirement as MP.

--TURKEY DEFEAT SWITZERLAND

In their second game in the Euro 2008, Turkey won against tournament's co-hosts Switzerland with a score of 2-1, and gained advantage on the way to the quarter finals. Though Turkey fell behind in the first half, they won the game with goals by Semih Senturk and Arda Turan in the second half. With this score Turkey pushed Switzerland out of the championship.

--TO BE OR NOT TO BE

In the law, it was written "to be" accidentally instead of "not to be". No one in the government, the parliament and the presidential office realized this mistake. Now, it is necessary "to be" convicted of bribery and corruption "to be" secretary of a chamber. This scandalous law was ratified by ten different authorities for ten times.

Several guests have gathered at the house of retired ambassador Osman Faruk Logoglu and they thanked former President Ahmet Necdet Sezer for appointing such judges to the Constitutional Court. Besides the Sezer couple, Hikmet Cetin, Sabih Kanadoglu, Prof. Dr. Nusret Aras, Prof. Dr. Tuncalp Ozgen and Ozden Toker partook in the dinner. They told Sezer that the regime was maintained thanks to his foresighted decisions.
