--ERDOGAN SAID "WE ARE OVER THE LIMIT," AND NATURAL GAS PRICES RAISED

Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the "price rise schedule" demanded by the Central Bank during a meeting of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB). Erdogan said that natural gas prices would be raised as of June 1, and electricity prices would be raised in July. Erdogan argued that the government had to raise prices due to the rise in global energy prices.

--THY'S THREE-MONTH NET PROFIT IS 125 MLN YTL

Turkish Airlines (THY) announced its three-month net profit as 125 million YTL. A statement of the company said THY's net profit was up 207 percent in the first quarter of 2007 over the same period of 2006.

--HIKE IN PRICE OF NATURAL GAS

The price of natural gas rose by 7.4 percent for residences and by 8.3 percent for businesses in Turkey as of June 1. The price of electricity will increase as of July.

--100 MILLION MOBILE RECORDS TO BE UPDATED

A draft law in the Turkish parliament makes it obligatory for users of mobile phones to update their records. Users of mobile phones will update their names and addresses by applying at their telephone operator. Those mobile phone users who do not update their records will have their service cancelled. Around 100 million mobile records are expected to be updated.

--SHAMEFUL REPORT AT PARLIAMENT

In a report submitted to the Turkish parliament, Turkish police said that 1,800 children were sexually harassed in Turkey in the past year. Four of these children were killed.

--NO SCHOOL ON JUNE 4

Turkish Minister of National Education Huseyin Celik said that all schools will be closed on June 4 to celebrate the World Environment Day. Some 15 million students, one million teachers and educational personnel and parents will collect garbage from beaches, river sides, lakes and picnic areas on June 4.

--NEW DOCUMENTS IN BUGGING AND TAPPING

It has been revealed that police had tapped, bugged and traced all telephone lines, cell phones, all SMS, e-mail and faxes and the web-pages visited for at least six months. The security department received "permission to trace" all the phone conversations and e-mail traffic during the presidential and general elections, showing the terrorist DHKP-C organization as a reason.

--NATURAL GAS PRICES UP

The government raised natural gas prices as of June 1. Thus, one cubic meter of natural gas for residential usage will rise 7.4 percent, with an 8.3 percent increase for industry. Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the announcement: "It is true that the government will raise electricity prices. We also have to raise natural gas prices as of June 1."

--ALL COUNTRY BEING WATCHED

During discussions of the bugging scandal, it has been revealed that the intelligence unit of the security department is tracing all communication throughout the country. Ramazan Akyurek, the head of the unit whose name was involved in some disputable incidents, wrote a note on "detailed telephone registers" and applied to the Ankara Criminal Court to trace all communication means. He showed "intelligence against terrorist organizations" as a reason for the monitoring. The court approved the demand of the intelligence unit and decided to extend the tapping period every three months.

--RULING AKP IN CAMP

Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his Justice and Development Party (AKP) would assess the opinion of the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya on the merits of the closure case against his party. In the Kizilcahamam meeting of the party, Erdogan said that his party would submit its assessments to the Constitutional Court as soon as possible.

--NGOs MUST DEFEND DEMOCRACY, ERDOGAN

Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) did not embrace democracy sufficiently in Turkey.

"If democratic principles and institutions become topics of debates, this would hurt NGOs the most. NGOs must defend democracy in Turkey", Erdogan said.

Coach of Turkey's national football team, Fatih Terim said that his squad is very excited and ready for the upcoming EURO 2008 championships. "We are a team that believes in success. We will add color to the championship," Terim said. Turkey's first game at the championships will be against Portugal on June 7.

--TARGET IS $1 TRILLION

Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the government aimed to raise the gross national product to $1 trillion. Erdogan said the national income per capita was up to $10,000 and the government wanted to make it $15,000.

NATURAL GAS PRICES UP

The natural gas prices will rise as of June 1st. One meter of natural gas in residences would be up by 7.4 percent and that in businesses would be up by 8.3 percent. Electricity will be automatically priced as of June 1.
