--CLOSURE CASE STARTS ON JULY 28T

Constitutional Court will start debating the closure case filed against ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on July 28.

Hasim Kilic, President of the Constitutional Court, said that the decision on the case might be given in 3 to 10 days. If that happens, the closure case will be finalized in 4.5 months, breaking a record.

--WE LOST SUNA PEKUYSAL

Renowned Turkish theater and cinema actress Suna Pekuysal passed away yesterday.

Pekuysal (75) had broken her hip at her house last Thursday. The actress, who had been receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of Istanbul University Hospital, lost her life due to heart failure. Pekuysal will be laid to rest on Thursday.

-- RULING AKP CASE ON JET SPEED

Constitutional Court stated that it would begin hearing the closure case against Turkey's ruling AKP on July 28. Ruling AKP case has reached that stage within 4.5 months. Welfare Party (RP) case had reached that stage in 8 months, and Virtue Party (FP) in two years. The lawsuit, which the chief prosecutor of the Court of Appeals filed on March 14, will be heard on its merits on July 28.

--NEW STOPPER MEIRA FOR CIMBOM

Galatasaray (Cimbom) soccer team of Turkey signed a 4-year contract with Portuguese football player Fernando Meira. 30-year old Meira was transferred from German Stuttgart team. He is playing stopper in defense.

The Constitutional Court set a date for the closure case against the ruling AKP. The case is expected to be concluded either on August 1st or on 8th. It is striking to see that the court will hold "verdict sessions" before the Supreme Military Council meeting due on July 1st. When the fact that closure cases had lasted for only five days so far, experts think that the closure case may be concluded on August 1, or August 8 the latest.

--TOURIST INFLOW IN ANTALYA

Turkey's southern tourism resort of Antalya broke daily tourist record in 2008. 59,006 tourists arrived in the city by plane on August 20.

--ISTANBUL POLICE NOT FAULTY

Istanbul regional administrative court decided that Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah and seven police officers were not faulty in Dink killing case. Istanbul police was criticized of not following the tip-off that came from Trabzon, and inspectors wanted authorities to launch an investigation. Then, the governor permitted an investigation.

--$4 MLN FOR CONTROVERSIAL SUBMARINES

Turkey ordered six S-214 German-made submarines which is used by only two navies in the world and having problems. Greece keeps the first delivery at the port for nearly two years. Greeks found 400 technical problems in the submarine. The most important thing is inefficient engines of the submarine. South Korea, another user of these submarines, revised them a few times due to high volume.

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul said he was aware of all problems Greek navy faced. He said German joint venture was preferred because it solved technical problems.

--THY PILOTS NOT TO FLY FOR A DAY

Pilots of Turkish Airlines (THY) decided not to fly for one day since captain Bahadir Altan's contract was terminated. Captain Altan was fired because he reacted to VIP passengers, including several ruling party executives, who were allowed to get in the plane without his approval.

--JULY 28: DAY OF FATE

Constitutional Court will start hearing the closure case filed against ruling AKP. Chief Judge Hasim Kilic said, "we will start hearing on Monday. But I do not know how long it will take."

Opponent figures were eliminated by the Higher Board of Education for the pending rector appointments at universities. Names of candidates at 3 universities out of 21, who got highest votes at elections in their universities, were not in the list to be sent to President Abdullah Gul for appointment.

--"TURKISH ECONOMY IN FREE FALL"

It was claimed that Turkish economy was kind of running towards a wall and Turkey was on the brink of a major crisis.

Wirtschaftswoche, the most influential weekly magazine of the German-speaking world, published a report in its latest edition with the headline "Turkish economy in free fall." The report highlighted that Turkish consumers were having really hard problems.

The Constitutional Court decided to debate the closure case against the ruling AKP as of July 28. Asked how long the case would last, rapporteur Alparslan Altan said, "it depends on course of the debate."

--SUNA PEKUYSAL PASSES AWAY

The unforgettable player of the "Lukus Hayat" (Luxurious Life) operetta that was staged for 14 years, Suna Pekuysal passed away the previous day. Pekuysal also acted in 100 films and 250 theater plays.

Constitutional Court President Hasim Kilic said that the court would begin hearing the closure case against Turkey's ruling AKP on July 28, 2008. Kilic said that they would start negotiations, but they did not know how long the negotiations would take.

--SISTER SUNA MADE EVERYBODY CRY

Cinema and theater actress Suna Pekuysal, who was under treatment at a hospital due to a broken hip, passed away of cardiac failure. Pekuysal performed in more than 250 plays and nearly 100 movies. A ceremony will be held for her tomorrow.
